What is Safety?

ANSI Z590.3 is a standard that provides guidelines for the development and implementation of safety and health training programs. According to this standard, “safety” can be defined as the state of being free from unacceptable risks of harm or damage. This includes the prevention of injuries, illnesses, property damage, and other negative consequences that may result from work activities. The standard emphasizes that safety is a shared responsibility among workers, supervisors, managers, and employers, and that it involves both physical and psychological factors. In summary, safety refers to the implementation of measures and practices that aim to prevent harm and ensure the well-being of workers and others involved in work activities.

ANSI/ASSE Z590.3—2011 defines safety as “freedom from unacceptable risk” with risk defined as “An estimate of the probability of a hazard-related incident or exposure occurring”. Hazard is defined as “The potential for harm”
