When operating a theatre rigging line set, it is important to communicate clearly and effectively with other crew members to ensure safe and efficient operation of the equipment. The goal is to communicate intent. Expand upon this list to include phrases which make sense in your venue.

Here are some common phrases you might use while operating a line set:

1. “Clear the stage” or “Clear below” – Use this phrase to alert crew members or performers to clear the area below the line set before you begin to raise or lower it.
2. “On the rail” – Use this phrase to indicate that the line set is secured to the rail or the locking system is engaged and that it is safe to release the hand brake.
3. “Lifting” or “Raising” or “Going out” – Use these phrases to indicate that you are starting to raise the line set. You should continue to communicate throughout the lift, using phrases like “Half way up” or “Almost at the top.” Keep in mind not everyone will understand “going out” therefore use of this phrase is discouraged.
4. “Holding” or “Stopping” – Use these phrases to indicate that you need to stop the line set or hold it at a specific height.
5. “Lowering” – Use this phrase to indicate that you are starting to lower the line set. Again, you should continue to communicate throughout the process. “Coming in” is often used however it might not be clear to people who are not specifically trained.
6. “Off the rail” – Use this phrase to indicate that the line set is no longer secured to the rail and that it is safe to re-engage the hand brake.

It is important to speak clearly and confidently when using these phrases and to always verify that other crew members have heard and understood your instructions before proceeding with any action.
